Day 8

5am.  We've been sleeping for a good few hours when a SUDDEN, LOUD, SCARY-ASS noise comes through the windows... seemingly encasing our room and perhaps coming in!! Both Sam and I wake with a start, look out the immediate window, and think simultaneously "What in GOD'S NAME is THAT?!?". And then nothing. No sound. We're both tense and ready to flee but nothing else happens. So we carefully lay down again, alertness starting to drop. Maybe we dreamt it? Maybe we imagined it?
A few minutes later, the noise starts again... louder and closer, if it was possible. "Aaaaah! Flee!!" is the immediate response! Sam's up - running about the room from window to window trying to see what's going on. And he spots it. Er, them. And he starts jumping around like a little kid, "Monkeys!! There are MONKEYS!! GET UP!!!!!!!". I try to fake fear in order to stay in my nice warm bed, but Sam will have none of it. And then we're outside, cameras in hand, looking at these miniscule, ugly-ass animals that have been the cause of our 5am wake-up call. The 'howler monkeys', as they are appropriately called, would make this noise whenever scared... which happened to be whenever the smallest of cars would go by (which was every 4-5 minutes).  Birds were everywhere, consorting with the monkeys to create a symphony of noise no human could ever sleep through - images of getting up at 5am from now on drift in my mind and already I'm grumpy. Damn nature!

FISHING!

Our second day was 8 hours of sportfishing and with hopes and dreams for 200-300 pound marlin, roosterfish, or even sailfish, we set off into the calm (and later very choppy) waters of the Pacific Ocean. But alas... some things are just not meant to be.

Looking for prey... just like Sam...

Where are those damn fish?

With live bait, and then fake pink octopi, there must be fish? But alas, no bites for us...

But what beautiful scenery!

I'm having a great time! Catching a tan, viewing the manta rays, sting rays, dolphins, etc. jumping about!

This bird followed us for some time, trying to see if we had any yummy treats. No luck for it... or us!

Apparently, rooster fish are close to the rocks, so we circled and circled...

A rock with hair?

What a rough life this fishing is!!

A bunny rock!!

At some point, knowing that we were probably quite frustrated with our fishing adventure, having not had a decent bite in 6 hours, our captains asked us if we wanted to see deer. Deer? We thought it was an odd question, since we were out fishing, but they repeated the question and we agreed.  Off on a deserted beach we went, barefoot and a little confused, and our captain took us into the wilderness where spiky rocks and strange animals got us at every step. Up to a cabin perched practically in a tree, we entered to find the scariest and shadiest bunch of hooligans I have probably ever seen. With guns off to the side, and starving deer tied up to furniture, we made the quick assessment that staying long was not really a good idea. So we made the obligatory Holas and left as quickly as possible. What was our captain thinking, taking us to see these scary people who he called "friends"? Very suspicious...

There was wildlife though!

These crabs were everywhere, and Sam made it a point, wherever we were, to give chase to the crabs. But they would run (exceedingly fast!) into the hundreds of holes they had dug up in case they had to flee from crazy tourists (which we were, who were we kidding?)

Once off the Island of Moreau, our first sea-side excitement came from the mating turtles!
Gotta love mating in the wild!

Dare I say it? A bite? Are we actually catching a fish? YAY!!

Only took 7 hours to catch this one, a YellowJack, which gracefully committed suicide for our cause.

Hurray! A fish! A ... small ... 10 pound fish. ... Where the hell are the big fish?
Damn fishing!

An end to a long, bouncy, and somewhat successful day.

Off to Father Rooster for dinner and Bahama Mamas, we enjoyed the sunset from Playa Ocotal.

Before... and after the Bahama Mamas!!  :)

We end the day, exhausted, and slightly tanned with expectations for serious snorkeling tomorrow!
